Podcasting for Yoga Teachers

Podcasting for Yoga Teachers

Teaching yoga can go so much deeper than just cueing a physical workout class — there is a certain way that a skillful teacher can use words and language and imagery to connect to  deep emotions and levels of awareness — It makes perfect sense that they could use their voices and the skill and this talent in the medium of podcasting.

Before I dive too far in, I want to  invite you to participate in a special. Podcast Envy experiment that I am conducting for the end of the year, which has to do with… gratitude! (I know… kinda obvious.)

I want to do an episode for the end of the year featuring other podcast makers and podcast listeners expressing gratitude for their favorite podcasts, the amazing magical wonderful things that have happened to them since they started listening to or producing podcasts and that could be you.

So if you feel grateful for podcasts or podcasting, I would love for you to be a part of the episode. Send me a short audio clip (3min or less) and/or post visual representations of how you appreciate making or listening to podcasts over on Instagram using #podcastgratitude. Be sure to tag me @andreaklunder so I see it!

To share the audio clip, message me directly andrea [at] thecreativeimpostor.com and I’ll give you instructions.

Article

This episode was inspired by Shannon Crow of The Connected Yoga Teacher, who appeared right here on episode 033 of Podcast Envy, talking all about how to use podcasting as a medium for social impact beyond the impact that you can have as a local yoga teacher.

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I am also a yoga teacher and though I don’t do it full time anymore, I spent a lot of time and energy and money and frustration and exhilaration learning how to teach yoga and meditation and getting a full education around the ins and outs of yoga business.

So I reached out to a panel of four podcasters who have been also teaching yoga anywhere from 2 to 15 years, and who each have a very different type of show. I’m excited to introduce to you:

Gabby Orcutt from Soul Speak

Amanda Kingsmith from M.B.Om

Kathryn Nicolai from Nothing much happens

and Natalia Hastings from Flow With Me Yoga

One thing that these yogi podcasters all have in common is that they each have a very distinct origin story for their show. I shouldn’t be surprised by this because I know that excellent yoga teachers know how to weave stories into their classes from their own personal experience in such a way that it resonates deeply with their students.

So it should not surprise me that these women have awesome origin stories and tons of wisdom on the following questions:

  • How did your podcast come to be?
  • Why did you decide to focus on the specific niche you’ve chosen (guided yoga practices; the business of yoga; bedtime stories to help you sleep, discussions about yoga, pregnancy and self-care)?
  • Does your podcast directly support your yoga teaching business and if so, in what way?
  • How do you measure success with your show?
  • How have you been growing your audience?
  • What has been your biggest podcasting challenge?
  • What is your best advice for a yoga teacher considering their own podcast?

I’ve gotta be honest — hearing these success stories and strategies and ideas-– I wish that when I had a yoga studio business and was teaching yoga and meditation full time, I had made a yoga podcast!

In fact, I had a client who asked me if I would ever consider doing such a thing because she loved taking my classes, but I really did not at that time even know what the heck a podcast was and since they were available for free, I couldn’t figure out how you make money off of one (money I desperately needed.) So I just dismissed it.

I feel like if I would have done it things might have ended differently for my yoga business, but I don’t know. Maybe we are right where we need to be and things happen the way they’re supposed to.
