Podcasting, paranormal investigations, entrepreneurial success (and failure), cats in space… all this and more lie ahead should you choose to continue down this road.

Back in the days before I ever had a podcast production business, before I even had a podcast, I had a yoga studio. And it was a HARD business model. Some of the most stressful years of my life happened in that place. (And it is not lost on me that the whole reason I was attracted to yoga was for peace of mind.)
5 years into that business, I shut it down, filed bankruptcy and wondered what to do next. We’ll skip the depression and hopelessness part for now.
And at that time, I was a NEW podcast listener.
It was my escape.
It was a place where ordinary people like me created businesses, communities… worlds! on their own terms without gatekeepers. They were having FUN. And I wanted to be part of it.
It was my lifeline.
Now, I think, SOME of that magic has been lost. It’s easier than ever before to launch a show without studying the craft of digital media storytelling, easier to use cheap tech to deliver mediocre to poor sound quality, easier to insert a barrage of ads and promotions into your “content.” (We’ll talk about that ‘c’ word in a future episode.) And it’s easier than ever to get swept up in the rush of never-ending quantities of output over quality of engagement.
But there are some shows, some podcasters, who still have that spark that drew me to podcasting’s flame in the depths of the darkened wood called entrepreneurial burnout.
Becky Kilmnick and Diana Doty of Homespun Haints are those podcasters. Over the years, they have become masters in the craft of independent digital storytelling and community building.
I actually first met Becky years ago at She Podcasts Live as she was looking for production solutions to enhance the quality and simplify the workflow for their horror comedy podcast of true ghost stories. That night at my AirBNB in Atlanta, I tuned into my first episode of Homespun Haints (during a rainstorm) and well, about halfway through, I was convinced the place I was staying in was HAUNTED. And I’ve been a fan ever since!
Ever the experimental entrepreneurs, Becky and Diana have recently launched a NEW project for the indie business minded creative searching for a better path. And no, this isn’t haunted… probably.
Oh and bonus points if you want to hear my OWN ghostly story on Homespun Haints. Thankfully, I haven’t had any new encounters to warrant a return guest visit to their show. But, you never know.
