PE053: What has podcasting done for you lately?

Just to have any amount of validation and that well received-ness, that makes you try the next thing with a little less fear that I think it’s really cool and wonderful.

Karolyn Blake

Twenty (or so) minutes. Seven guests. One question:

What has podcasting done for you?

I asked because there are many conversations about what we get from listening to podcasts. But what are the benefits of creating a podcast? Sitting on this side of the mic and talking to our virtual audience?

In answering, my guests and I shared lots of laughs, served up dozens of great quotes, and unanimously agreed on a single truth: What you get out of podcasting is greater than what you put in to it.

Don’t believe me? Well, I’ve got back up.

“Right now, I cannot imagine NOT being a part of this community!”

Molly Southgate

Molly Southgate says it’s all about community. As the youngest member of Southgate Media Group, she’s logged more than 500 episode appearances on shows ranging from TV fancasts to her own book-centric series Read Between the Lines. Never mind that she’s only twelve.

For her, podcasting is a family affair and a connection to people who share her self-described fan-geek interests. Her mother Martha credits podcasting with creating opportunities for personal growth. Like Molly, community engagement, sits at the top of Martha’s list. Case and point? Discussions on Southgate’s popular Orange is the New Black fancast have been known get comically inaccurate yet listeners return again and again because Martha and husband Rob are genuinely having fun with the show.

Ansel Burch & Karolyn Blake, two members of the Starlight Radio Dreams team, say that podcasting’s greatest reward is being able to tell the stories they want to tell in the way they want to tell them without having to go through media bosses who make arbitrary decisions about content.

They are the writers, the actors, the producers.

They have complete control over their end product; the good, the bad, and the laughably unfunny.

Icky Lousy Junky Life Showdown is a podcast for anyone who’s ever made a bad life choice.  Angela DeMarco started the show as a way to drive clients to her health and life coaching business. What she and co-host Jamie Black have built is a community of listeners who’ve all gone through similar situations and feel less lonely as they go through the process of living, laughing, and recovering together, virtually.

But wait! The conversation doesn’t end there. Want some roundtable advice on starting your own podcast? Listen in.

Maybe you’ll be the person to finally bring to life that frog reproduction* podcast Rob Southgate and the world have been waiting for.

*Probably a thing; we don’t know. If it’s your thing, why aren’t you podcasting about it?!

Even if you’re like, ‘I have no idea what I want to do, but I know I can talk,’ do it because it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a way to communicate your ideas like no other… Just go for it. Walk off the cliff. It’s really not as scary as you think.
